There is no substitute for a conversation

I have done some thinking lately, mainly around the uses of technology and social media in my business.  For those of you who don’t know I am the  “Sales Guy” for a Recruiting Firm in Nashville Tn.  I admit that I am a big believer in the uses of technology and I try to stay current with the latest and greatest.  I am active on Twitter  (feel free to follow @spinmantv) , Facebook, LinkedIn, About.Me, etc…and I use all of those technologies to connect with people .  I use email, SMS, MMS, IM as ways to stay in touch and converse throughout the course of a day as well.  The question is though, am I using these technologies too often?  What happened to the days when I simply picked up the phone, dialed a number and spoke to someone?

I submit that it is more out of necessity than choice that I have moved away from the phone.  These days it is more and more difficult to reach people via telephone.  People don’t answer their office phones any more.  Voice Mail does not get checked.  Cell Phones are put on mute or turned off during the day.  All of those things force a guy like me to get creative , or simply move to using things other than the phone to communicate.  It is a shame because all too often I hear that doing business is becoming impersonal.  There is no relationship anymore , it is all just email exchange etc.

How do we change that ?  Will the telephone make a comeback and become the defacto method of communication?  Why has everyone moved away from conversation ?

I want to hear from you.  Do you still make phone calls?  Have you moved away from the phone and rely more and more on the Social Media tools to connect with people?  Do you miss having telephone conversations?  What is your preferred method of communication these days?

I for one am making a conscious effort to pick up the phone and attempt to have those conversations.  I am not naive enough to think that I can move away from all the other tools I mentioned and still be effective.  I can, however, make more of an effort to do more using the phone and supplement my efforts with the other technologies instead of the reverse.

Think about it.  Let me know your thoughts.  I am curious to hear what you have to say, especially my fellow recruiting practitioners.  In fact give me a call and let’s talk about it.   615.768.9370

Have a great Day.  Be Good !

  1. Hello there, terrific content. Seriously happy I came across it with Google search, to bad that it was on-page 4 of search results. It seems like your making use of WordPress on your web site, you might need to take a look at this plugin for WordPress at it has substantially helped me with my internet site rankings in Google Search. I’d hate to see your useful written content not be discovered by individuals. Best of luck with your web site.
